What is Kundalini Yoga – The Yoga of Consciousness

When I was lucky enough in this lifetime to come across the teachings of Kundalini Yoga, I knew it was the practice and system my heart had been searching for. This practice can be better described, in my opinion, as a yogic technology, complete as an energetic science, a spiritual journey and a path to sovereignty over our own inner power and life-force. This lineage of yoga weaves together asana (postures), sound, mantra, breath and meditation to allow us to experience states of biochemical equanimity in the body and the felt sense of infinity. Herein lies the only “goal” or objective of any yogic practice, to join or yoke the finite (human body) with the infinite (spirit, GOD, nature, however you wish to describe).

At the heart of this practice lies Naad, the universal sound current and the vibrational harmony that sweeps us onto the path of connection with infinity. When you practice Kundalini Yoga, each class can and likely will be vastly different. Some classes will focus heavily on working the physical body, while others may weave in more meditation and exercises with breath. Embedded into each class is the use of sacred mantra. These mantras are not simply words, they are coded vibrations. Repetition of these sacred sounds cuts through ego and illusion, helping to clear the subconscious and awaken our own inner reserves of energy. When we chant, especially in groups, we are engaging with an ancient, sacred intelligence that resonates at a biocellular level – balancing our glandular system, regulating the nervous system and opening up neural pathways for deeper clarity in our life.

Kundalini Yoga teaches us to harvest our own energy. Rather than seeking external power or stimulation, we learn to generate, sustain and direct our own energy with intention. In these moments, sovereignty begins as we become the steward of our own consciousness and energy. I also love that this practice works fast. Whether you have 3 minutes, 20 minutes, 90 minutes or 2 hours to practice – you will feel changes. Consistency is the secret key, no matter how much time we have. This practice is not about escaping our busy, everyday lives for our spiritual practice but about gaining the tools, awareness and energy to infuse our daily life with more purpose, grace and awareness.

In the same way that Vedic Yoga is linked to Hindu Teachings, the teachings of Kundalini Yoga in it’s modern transmission has strong connections to the teachings of Sikhism. These teachings are by no means a religious requirement, they are simply the root of the wisdom of the teachings and where they pull their vibration and history. Many of the mantras we use in this practice come from the Guru Granth Sahib (more on this in another post!), which is revered not simply as a historical text but as a living guide to the teachings through mantra.

Ultimately, Kundalini Yoga as taught in this lineage is a path of empowerment. It helps us clear subconscious blocks, awaken our energy, and stand strong in your own sovereignty. It’s a mystical, energetic practice—yes—but it’s also profoundly practical: a way to live with clarity, purpose, and inner authority. It has been a passionate, transformative and divine journey diving into these practices and I can’t wait to share them with you.
