The Eclipse Portal: Yogic Power Days
By Anna Caldwell - Yoga, Sound Healing & Meditation Online and Mallorca, Spain
On August 12th, 2026, something rare is happening over Mallorca.
Mallorca sits directly in the path of totality — one of the most extraordinary places on earth to witness this eclipse event. As the sun sets over the Mediterranean, the moon will pass directly between the earth and the sun, and for approximately 96 seconds, at around 8:31 PM, the sky will go dark. The solar corona will appear … that luminous, blazing ring of light that is normally invisible to us, held behind the brightness of the sun. Stars will emerge as dusk falls (including a meteor shower!) and temperature on the island will drop (which, if you’re here in the summer, is certainly welcome!). It will be a true cosmic masterpiece.
We call this a total solar eclipse. But in the yogic and spiritual traditions…
…it is a profound threshold.
Eclipses come in pairs (solar + lunar), and we experience somewhere around four of them per year. They occur during an eclipse “season,” as we say, in an approximately 35-day window every 6 months when the moon’s orbit crosses the plane of the earth’s path closely enough for all three of the bodies to fall in precise alignment - wow! During a solar eclipse, the moon passes directly between the earth and the sun, casting its shadow onto the earth's surface and our ordinary cast of light is disrupted.
What makes today's eclipse extraordinary is not just its rarity — though a total solar eclipse over any single location is rare enough — but the timing. This is a sunset eclipse. Totality arrives as the sun is descending toward the horizon, merging the ending of day with a cosmic alignment over the sea. In all the traditions that work with celestial energies, this particular combination (the threshold of dusk, the darkening of the sun, the appearance of the corona) is profound.
Surya, Chandra
The sun (Surya) is the symbol of the conscious mind, the outward-flowing life force, identity, vitality, and the Higher Self. In Kundalini Yoga it governs the right channel, Pingala Nadi, the channel of solar, active, masculine energy. It is the force of radiance, of action, of knowing.
The moon (Chandra) represents the subconscious mind, the emotional body, the inner world of feeling, intuition, and the feminine. It governs Ida Nadi, the left channel, the receptive, cooling, lunar current that flows through the subtle body.
Om Suryaya Namaha — I bow to the sun, I honour the solar force within me.
Om Chandraya Namaha — I bow to the moon, I honour the lunar force within me.
Paramhansa Yogananda described the physical sun as the symbol of the spiritual eye, the seat of higher consciousness within the human being. When the moon eclipses the sun, he said, it mirrors the way emotions can obscure our higher nature, casting the mind into shadow.
A solar eclipse, then, is not just an astronomical event. It is a living symbol of the interplay between the conscious and the unconscious, the outer and the inner, the known self and the parts of ourselves that remain in shadow. For a brief, extraordinary moment, the hidden becomes visible: the corona appears, the subconscious is illuminated, and we are given an opportunity to see what is normally invisible.
Eclipses are powerful moments that can initiate sudden changes. They come with a charge, and by this we mean a heightened quality of energy that many people feel in the days before and after, not just in the moment itself. This can look like emotions rising, old patterns surface and dormant parts of our subconscious (for better or for worse) become illuminated to ourselves. Time to pay attention to what has been lurking beneath the surface!
This can feel disorienting if we resist it. But if we welcome it, ie if we understand that the eclipse is bringing us nearer to our own truth, clearing what no longer serves, and creating the conditions for a new level of elevation, we can turn to our practice and use this power window to move closer to our own internal truth. Furthermore, in Vedic astrology, eclipses mark karmic shifts or moments when the soul's deeper trajectory becomes accessible, when the patterns of the past can be more easily released and the intentions of the future are more powerfully seeded.
The yogic traditions often recommend that eclipse time be spent in practice …. in meditation, in mantra, in stillness, rather than in ordinary activity. Not because the eclipse is dangerous, but because its energy is amplified. What we do with our awareness in these moments matters more than usual! Pick one of your favorite mantras or, try the two listed above for Surya and Chandra, and practice chanting 108 times (you can chant along with this instrumental track, if you like). The Kundalini tradition offers Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung — the Siri Gaitri mantra — as a powerful healing and alignment practice particularly suited to times of transition and transformation. Chanting this mantra during or around an eclipse is considered especially potent for healing, for clarity and for tuning the energetic field.
If you are ready to take your sound healing beyond an occasional practice and experience the benefits of sound, mantra & frequency as a regular practice, you can join the Lumina Sound Circle Online Membership for sound baths, yogic practices, meditations and more.
I offer Yoga Teacher Trainings and Sound Healing Trainings in Mallorca — immersive, embodied containers for those who want to go beyond the practice and into the teaching. These trainings weave together the philosophy of the Vedic and Kundalini traditions with the living experience of practice, so that what you learn becomes something you carry in your body, not just your mind.
